Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the cervix – the lower section of the uterus in the female reproductive system. The most common cause of this cancer is Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – a sexually transmitted infection. When prone to HPV, the body’s immune system usually stops the virus from harming. But in some people, this virus survives for a longer period, resulting in converting cervical cells into cancerous cells.
Based on the conversion and appearance of cervical cells into cancerous cells; this cervical cancer is classified into the following types:
• Squamous Cell Carcinomas: When the outer layer of the cervix cell known as the Squamous cell is affected by cancer it is termed squamous cell carcinoma.
• Adenocarcinoma: When the column-shaped glandular cells lining the cervical canal get affected it is termed adenocarcinoma.
Not every cervical cell changes to cancerous cells, but finding these critical cells and preventing them before they convert into cervical cancer cells is the optimum solution. For reducing the risk of HPV infection with the help of screening tests and vaccination.
